Statement from Hunter Communications CEO Michael Wynschenk

Regarding the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act

November 8, 2021

“Friday’s passage of the federal infrastructure bill creates enormous opportunity for Oregon to meet the challenge of expanding rural connectivity and accessibility. The broadband provisions of the bill allocate roughly $65 billion nationally for internet deployment and affordability.

Our local economy increasingly runs on low-cost, fiber optics technology and a wide range of its applications. This legislation will spur overdue investment, enabling us to better serve our customers and expand into new communities. It will create jobs, generate economic growth, and improve education, healthcare, energy conservation and public safety.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, our economy and our workforce have both changed. Where and how we work has become more dependent on fast, affordable connectivity. The emerging economy of tomorrow increases our need to connect quickly and reliably through technology from anywhere at any time.

Friday’s passage of this new legislation will provide needed funding to help more people build and access their business from anywhere. We believe Oregon is uniquely positioned to be a model for an increasingly hybrid workforce. Helping retain local talent while attracting new residents and business opportunities to Southern Oregon remains one of our key priorities as a company.

This legislation will also play an important role in establishing Oregon as a hub of fiber internet construction and technology design. Hunter has experienced significant employment growth and made our own investments in increasing design, engineering, and construction capabilities. We strongly support the concept of public-private partnerships that could expedite the use of these funds to provide fiber-optic internet to the underserved and unserved.

Hunter is already working hard to expand the best fiber network in Oregon. Now, we stand ready to help more neighborhoods, businesses, and communities build the next generation of ultra-high-speed fiber optic technology.”
